2012 Annual Professional Development Award winner!

Congratulations to Amy Pierce Melton, who is the 2012 recipient of the ARLIS/WNY Chapter’s Travel Award! Amy will be attending the ARLIS/NA “Coloring Outside the Lines” conference in Toronto in March.

Amy is a December 2011 graduate of Syracuse University’s iSchool .  She has an impressive resume including coursework and/or internships at Harvard, Cornell and Syracuse University.

ARLIS/WNY 2012 Annual Professional Development Award

ARLIS/WNY has presented a professional development award to a chapter
member since 1994. This year, we are pleased to announce the availability of two $200 awards. This award is intended to help members, particularly new professionals, become involved in ARLIS/NA by attending the Annual ARLIS/NA Conference, which will be in Toronto, March 29th – April 2nd.

Applicants for the award must be dues-paying members of ARLIS/WNY and ARLIS/NA. All ARLIS/WNY members are eligible for the award. The chapter’s officers, members who have never attended the national conference, and those who will be participating in the conference as speakers, session/program moderators, moderators of a section, division or interest group, or serving on committees are especially encouraged to apply for the award.

Applicants for the award should include a current resume and a letter describing the applicant’s participation in the conference (if applicable), the benefits anticipated from conference attendance, and all travel funding expected from the applicant’s institution or other sources.

2012 Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management

The Art Libraries Society/North America (ARLIS/NA) and the Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) are pleased to announce that the 2012 Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management preliminary Website is live!

SEI 2012 will be held at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from June 19-22, 2012.  SEI 2012 is appropriate for visual resources professionals new to the field, those currently enrolled in library schools who wish to augment their experience with image management training, and more experienced professionals eager to update their skill sets in response to fast-changing technological advancements.

This intensive workshop will feature a curriculum that specifically addresses the requirements of today’s professional, and will include hands-on and lecture modules. Expert instructors will cover intellectual property rights, digital imaging, metadata and cataloguing, and strategic planning. Attendees will also have an opportunity to discuss and brainstorm on a range of issues, from new media and marketing visual resources to professional development and the future of the profession during the interactive session planned for the final morning of SEI.

Please note that additional information will be added to the Website in the coming weeks. Registration will open January 18, 2012.

Student Travel Award for Fall 2011 Meeting

Purpose:
To encourage students and prospective librarians to explore careers in art
and architecture librarianship through participation in ARLIS/WNY activities,
specifically the Fall 2011 Meeting in Ithaca.

Value:
$100 to defray travel/lodging costs.

Application:
To apply for the travel award, please submit by email:

1. A letter of application (no more than two sides in length) stating where
you learned of the award, your specific interest in art librarianship and
expectation of the conference in Ithaca, your professional goals, and why you
think you are a worthy candidate for the award.
2. A resume listing education background, employment history, and
professional activities and/or interests. Please include your telephone and
email address, as well as the names of two references including title, email,
addresses, and telephone numbers.

The deadline for submission is Monday, October 17, 2011.
Candidates will be notified as soon as possible.

Student Travel Award for Spring 2011 Meeting

The joint meeting of the Upstate New York Chapter of the Visual Resources Association (VRA) and Western New York chapter of Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) will be held at Scholes Library, NYS College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Alfred, NY on Monday, June 13th. The day’s schedule will include tours of the kiln rooms and other ceramics facilities, visits to the Schein-Joseph International Museum of Ceramic Art and the Inamori Kyocera Fine Ceramics Museum, business meetings for each chapter, and tours of the libraries and VR collections.  Katie O’Connell, who was our Fall 2010 Student Travel Award winner, will present her work on Flickr and Luna use at Cornell. We hope students and prospective librarians will join us at this exciting meeting.

To encourage students and prospective librarians to explore careers in art and architecture librarianship through contact with art library colleagues at the ARLIS/WNY Fall Meeting, scheduled for June 13, 2011 in Alfred, NY.

Value:
$100 to defray travel/lodging and meal expenses or (for local applicants) $20 for Monday lunch.

ARLIS/WNY 2011 Annual Professional Development Award
